There have been a lot of great teams throughout history. No, this is not just the franchises who have done it over a long period of time but also the teams who have stood out for having some of the most notable single seasons in history.
There are more than a few to choose from. But which teams stand above the rest on the list of the greatest teams to ever do it? Here are a few standouts.
1998 New York Yankees
On more than a few occasions, the Yankees will come up among the great teams of all time. But this may be the most outstanding team in MLB history. The 1998 Yankees didn’t have the most wins ever but finished third instead.
What separates them from the other two teams is that they won the World Series. What makes this Yankees squad so great is how deep the lineup was, with notable names and Hall of Famers throughout the entire team.
1996-97 Chicago Bulls
There was no more dominant regular-season team than this Bulls squad until recent years. Though the Steph Curry-led Golden State Warriors would better the 72-10 record of the 1996-97 Bulls, there was one significant difference between the two: these Bulls won the title.
There are a lot of great Bulls teams in history, but this one stands above the rest. With names such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, and Tony Kukoc, this would be the fifth of six Bulls championship teams in the 1990s.
1977-78 Montreal Canadiens
As with the Yankees, there are a lot of great teams in Canadiens lore. This version, however, maybe the best of the bunch. This Canadiens squad featured a whopping none future Hall of Famers. A sweep of the Maple Leafs, beating the feared Boston Bruins for the second straight year, led to the third Canadiens title in a row.
These Canadiens are the standard-bearer for NHL teams, though there are some close calls from Detroit and Edmonton.
